We have invested in a second GSSI ground radar system together with a full range of antennas from 200MHz to 1.5GHz. The high frequency antenna is hand held and normally used to assess structures such as walls and floors for voids or other hidden features. We have also upgraded our radar processing software to the latest version which, amongst other features, allows orthogonal data sets to be merged and timeslices made which can be run like a movie. These timeslices show the varying responses associated with increasing depth.

Holding your mouse over the 'Pause' button will pause the movie, moving the mouse away will continue the movie.

Stratascan have been involved in a recent edition of Channel 4's 'Lost buildings of Britain'. We were called in as part of an investigation into the fate of Fonthill Abbey, which collapsed in 1825.

The abbey was built by William Beckford, the richest man in England, between 1796 and 1822 and appears to have been plagued by structural and materials problems. A possible cause of the collapse of the 275' tall tower may have been poor or inadequate foundations, so Stratascan conducted a GPR survey in an attempt to obtain information about the nature of any surviving footings.

The animated Timeslice above shows the results of the survey at varying depths. The plan of the foundations can be clearly seen extending to depth, while linear anomalies corresponding to smaller walls and services can be seen nearer to the surface.
